چکیده

The transformation of vapor-deposited ultrastable glasses of indomethacin (IMC) into the supercooled liquid state near T(g) is monitored by means of dielectric spectroscopy. Films with thickness between 400 and 800 nm are deposited on differential interdigitated electrode cells and their loss profiles are measured during isothermal annealing using a dual-channel impedance technique for frequencies between 0.03 and 100 Hz. All dielectric loss spectra observed during the transformation process can be explained by a volume fraction of the supercooled liquid that increases linearly with time. From the early stages of the transformation to the liquid that is formed via complete annealing of the ultrastable glass, the average dielectric relaxation time as well as the distribution of relaxation times of the liquid component are identical to those of the conventional liquid obtained by cooling the melt. The dependence of the transformation rate on the film thickness is consistent with a growth front mechanism for the direct conversion from the ultrastable glass to the equilibrium supercooled liquid. We conclude that the IMC liquid recovered from the ultrastable glass is structurally and dynamically identical to the conventional supercooled state.

Effects of water contamination on the supercooled dynamics of a hydrogen-bonded model glass former.

Broad-band dielectric spectroscopy is a commonly used tool in the study of glass-forming liquids. The high sensitivity of the technique together with the wide range of probed time scales makes it a powerful method for investigating the relaxation spectra of liquids. One particularly important class of glass-forming liquids that is often studied using this technique consists of liquids dominated...

Structure and dynamics in protic ionic liquids: a combined optical Kerr-effect and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy study.

The structure and dynamics of ionic liquids (ILs) are unusual due to the strong interactions between the ions and counter ions. These microscopic properties determine the bulk transport properties critical to applications of ILs such as advanced fuel cells. The terahertz dynamics and slower relaxations of simple alkylammonium nitrate protic ionic liquids (PILs) are here studied using femtosecon...

7 cf ) Impulsive Stimulated Thermal Scattering of Glass - Forming Liquids

Impulsive Stimulated Thermal Scattering is a time domain laser spectroscopy that is applied to studying the relaxation dynamics of liquids in the supercooled temperature regime. Characterizing the relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids is essential to developing an understanding of the physics of the liquid-glass transition. Mode Coupling Theory is a popular theory that has had some success...

Reorientational relaxation of a linear probe molecule in a simple glassy liquid.

Within the mode-coupling theory (MCT) for the evolution of structural relaxation in glass-forming liquids, correlation functions and susceptibility spectra are calculated characterizing the rotational dynamics of a top-down symmetric dumbbell molecule, consisting of two fused hard spheres immersed in a hard-sphere system. It is found that for sufficiently large dumbbell elongations, the dynamic...

Glassy dynamics under superhigh pressure.

Nearly all glass-forming liquids feature, along with the structural alpha-relaxation process, a faster secondary process (beta relaxation), whose nature belongs to the great mysteries of glass physics. However, for some of these liquids, no well-pronounced secondary relaxation is observed. A prominent example is the archetypical glass-forming liquid glycerol. In the present work, by performing ...
